Ensure Immediate Return of Armenian POWs

More than 3 weeks have passed since the trilateral ceasefire was announced by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia and yet, a large number of Armenian Prisoners of War (POW) remain under Azerbaijani custody. International organizations, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, have been tasked to facilitate the return of POWs and search for all personnel who have been missing in action (MIA), however, due to the malicious unwillingness of the Azerbaijani government to cooperate, they have not had much success.

We must exert pressure on the Canadian government to do the following:

Work with international partners and multilateral organizations to hold Turkey and Azerbaijan accountable for their war crimes

Apply pressure on Ankara and Baku to cooperate in immediately returning POWs and provide all required information regarding missing personnel

Dear Minister Champagne,

As a concerned Canadian citizen, I write to you once more to urge our Canadian government to act immediately and protect the human rights of Armenians in the Republic of Artsakh.

Today, a large number of Armenian Prisoners of War (POW) are under Azerbaijani custody and nearly 100,000 Armenians are displaced, without any mechanisms in place to ensure their safe return. International organizations, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, have been tasked to facilitate the return of POWs and search for all personnel who have been missing in action (MIA), however, due to the malicious unwillingness of the Azerbaijani government to cooperate, they have not had much success.

More than 3 weeks have passed since the trilateral ceasefire was announced by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia and it is unacceptable that the Azerbaijani government will not release POWs and will not allow the search for MIA personnel. Even more despicable is the fact that we have witnessed numerous video accounts of the inhumane treatment Armenian POWs have endured while in the custody of the Azerbaijani government, including mutilation and execution. The longer Armenian POWs remain in the custody of Azerbaijan, the less likely they are to be returned safely. Armenian families are in anguish waiting for the return of their loved ones, many unsure if they will ever make it home alive.

During the past 2 months, Canada and the international community failed to protect Armenians against the aggression and war crimes perpetrated by Turkey and Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, these crimes continue today in the Armenian territories that Azerbaijan has occupied. However, you can make a difference if you act today:
-  Work with international partners and multilateral organizations to hold Turkey and Azerbaijan accountable for their war crimes 
-  Apply pressure on Ankara and Baku to cooperate in immediately returning POWs and provide all required information regarding missing personnel

My firm expectation is that the Government of Canada will make the right and responsible decision and take substantial and swift action regarding this highly urgent matter.
