Ask MP Cooper to Retract His Comments and Apologize

On February 16, 2022, MP Michael Cooper of St. Albert-Edmonton tabled a petition in the House of Commons and made a statement spreading falsehoods and Azerbaijani state propaganda.

In his statement, MP Cooper made unsubstantiated accusations against the Armenian Army related to events that took place in February 1992, in the town of Ivanyan (Khojaly) in Artsakh, without providing the appropriate context, while completely ignoring the unspeakable war crimes and human rights violations committed by Azerbaijan.

Furthermore, prior to tabling the petition, the Armenian National Committee of Canada contacted MP Cooper’s office, requesting clarification on his position regarding the petition he chose to sponsor. MP Cooper’s office responded by stating that the MP’s sponsorship of the petition does not imply that support to the petition, effectively lying to Canadians.

Take a minute and write to MP Cooper, demanding a retraction of his comments and a public apology to Armenian-Canadians.

Mr. Cooper,

I am writing to you today to express my outrage and utter discontent regarding the extremely toxic and misleading comments you made in the House of Commons, on February 16, 2022, whilst presenting petition e-3780.

Without any due diligence or meaningful research on your part, you have chosen to naively believe the unverified information provided to you by a group of people who wrongfully claim to be speaking on behalf of over 100,000 Canadians.

During the first Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) war, the town of Khojaly was used as a staging ground by Azerbaijani forces to target the civilian Armenian population of the nearby city of Stepanakert, the capital of Artsakh. After Armenian forces were successful in neutralizing the Azerbaijani firing positions, Azerbaijani authorities conveniently used the incident to place Armenians on the defensive and accuse them of a systematic massacre. This was later used by Azerbaijani authorities to create an anti-Armenian sentiment and distract the world from the war crimes and horrendous human rights violations committed by Azerbaijan.
 
Azerbaijan’s targeting of innocent Armenian civilians during the war was preceded by widespread anti-Armenian pogroms in the Azerbaijani cities of Sumgait (1988), Kirovabad (1988), Baku (1990), which you conveniently omitted from your statement.

Furthermore, I have learned that your office effectively lied to Armenian-Canadian organizations that inquired about your position on this matter, claiming that “MP Cooper’s sponsorship does not imply support.”

It is unfortunate that you have chosen to become a spokesperson for the state-sponsored propaganda of dictatorships such as Azerbaijan, while brazenly lying to concerned Canadians.

As a Canadian citizen, I am asking you to immediately retract your comments and make a public apology for disseminating wrong and foreign-sponsored information to Canadians.
