Thank Senators Batters & Carignan for Supporting Artsakh Motion M36

On October 28, Senator Leo Housakos introduced his motion, M36, in the Senate of Canada and called upon the federal government to:

- Recognize Artsakh

- Condemn Turkish-Azerbaijani aggression

- Ban all arms sales to Turkey

On November 1, Senator Denise Batters expressed her support for Senator Housakos’ motion on Twitter.

On November 5, Senator Claude Carignan gave a powerful speech in the Senate, urging colleagues to vote in favour of M36. A few statements from his speech (viewable here) are the following:

- “Canadian military technology has been contributing to the death of innocent civilians and to the destruction of cultural, religious and social heritage belonging to one of the most ancient civilizations in the world.”

- “It is our duty to stand up to the situation and demonstrate integrity and accept the responsibility of our actions as a world power which has always fought for peace”

Je voudrais exprimer ma plus sincère gratitude envers vous pour le discours poignant que vous  avez livré, et pour votre prise de position condamnant l’agression menée sans provocation par  l’Azerbaïdjan et la Turquie contre les civils arméniens innocents de la république d’Artsakh.

Un grand nombre de Canadiens d’origine arménienne sont affectés par la crise humanitaire qui  sévit actuellement à Artsakh. Nous pleurons la perte de ceux qui ont péri à cause de l’usage par  l’Azerbaïdjan d’artillerie lourde et de bombes à fragmentation qui ciblent des civils innocents,  des centres religieux et culturels et des infrastructures civiles. Nous sommes horrifiés et outrés  d’apprendre que la technologie militaire du Canada a été utilisée par l’Azerbaïdjan pour causer  des morts et la destruction du patrimoine de l’une des plus anciennes civilisations du monde.

En tant que pays reconnu pour ses efforts voués au maintient de la paix mondiale, le Canada  doit s’opposer à ces régimes tyranniques ainsi qu’à leurs violations flagrantes du droit  humanitaire international et des droits de la personne. Notre action collective contre ces  agressions définira la réputation du Canada sur la scène internationale.

De plus, comme vous l’avez clairement dit, « La population d’Artsakh a déclaré la création de sa  république par un processus démocratique il y a trois décennies déjà » et « seule la  reconnaissance de la République d’Artsakh peut désormais permettre d’arrêter le massacre  d’innocentes victimes du peuple arménien ». J’exhorte le Canada à devenir un exemple pour le  monde en prenant cette mesure importante.

Merci de vous être joint au sénateur Housakos pour défendre la justice. J’espère que vos  collègues sénateurs et dirigeants fédéraux se joindront à votre appel à agir pour défendre la  paix et la stabilité dans la région, et à reconnaître la république d’Artsakh.

Dear Senator Claude Carignan,

I would like to express my deepest gratitude for your powerful speech and your principled stance in condemning Azerbaijan and Turkey's unprovoked aggression against the innocent Armenian civilians in the Republic of Artsakh.

Canada is home to a significant number of Armenians who are greatly impacted by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Artsakh. We have mourned with the victims of those who have perished as a result of Azerbaijan’s use of heavy artillery and cluster bombs targeted towards innocent people, religious and cultural centres and civilian infrastructure. We have been horrified and outraged to learn that military technology from Canada has been used by Azerbaijan to cause these deaths and the destruction of the heritage of one of the most ancient civilizations in the world.

As a globally recognized peacekeeping nation, Canada must stand up to these tyrannical regimes and their blatant violation of international humanitarian law and human rights. Our collective action against these violations will continue to define what Canada stands for on the international stage.

Furthermore, as you clearly stated, “the Artsakh population has declared the creation of its Republic by a democratic process three decades ago” and “only by recognizing the Republic of Artsakh there can be a stop of the massacres of innocent victims”.  I urge Canada to become an example to the world by taking this very important step.
